The free distribution of the 24 million mosquito nets announced by the Ministry of Health shall begin in Lira next month, the District Malaria Focal Point Person has confirmed.

Mwesigye Etwop the Hepatitis B and Meningitis A immunisation programme affected the registration process leading to the delay of the distribution.

In November last year, Ministry of health announced that it will distribute 24 million treated mosquito nets in the next five months as one of the efforts to fight malaria, the deadly disease that kills 70- 100,000 citizens annually in the country.

Dr Jane Ruth Aceng, the minister of health, then said the nationwide Long Lasting Insecticide Net (LLIN) distribution campaign, dubbed "Aryemo Malaria - Sleep under a Mosquito net", would kick off on Dec. 9 last year until April this year, targeting about 36 million people.

However Mwesigy Etwop said most of the technical staffs are so much involved in the vaccination processes of Hepatis B and meningitis A, a reason why the program has not yet started.

Etwop however confirmed that the registration process will kick off on Sunday this week, followed by the distribution early next month.

Recently, while speaking during the commissioning of an Emergency Ward at St Johnís Hospital Atapara by the Papal Nuncio in Uganda, the Most Reverend Michael August Blume, Health Minister Dr. Jane Aceng said all those who will receive the nets must make sure they sleep under them, saying Malaria now kills faster than HIV/Aids.
