The former contestant for Lira Municipality Mayor under NRM ticket George Mawa and 170 residents of Alebtong have dragged government of Uganda to court over the existent of Karamojong herdsmen in Lango.

In the suit filed at Lira High Court last Friday, George Mawa and others through their Lawyer Innocent Omara and Company advocates want government to pronounce itself on the presence of the Karamojong herdsmen in Lango.

The plaintiffs in the notice of intention to sue are seeking special, general and punitive damages arising from trespass, alienation of land, destruction of crops and land, cutting down of trees, cattle theft by Karamojong herdsmen and cost of the suit which is likely to be over 6 billion shillings.

George Mawa said he and the other complainants are land owners in Otuke and Alebtong districts where the herdsmen are grazing their animals.

Speaking to Radio WA on Sunday George Mawa said that the existence of the herdsmen has created fears among the community, destruction of gardens and properties including allegation of rape among other things.

In a letter dated 3rd January 2017 and signed by Easter Mbayo, the Minister for Presidency, the RDC of Lira Robert Abak was instructed to see that Karamojong herdsmen are protected while in Lango.

The Lawyer representing George Mawa and 170 others Mr Innocent Omara confirmed that they have already served the Attorney General with a copy of the legal notice to sue and expect to receive their response within 45 days. The letter of intention to sue and they are to response in 45 working days.

Minster stress that because of the difficult situation the Community of Otuke should have the heart of Hospitality and accommodate the herdsmen in their area.

Last Tuesday during the meeting held at Otuke District, Lango Cultural Foundation resolved that all the herdsmen must withdraw from Lango and stop illegal entry to Lango.

However the women MP for Kotido District Hon Margaret Aleper asked both the local leaders and Community to accept them in Lango because Karamojong herdsmen are just looking for pastures and water.

However both the local leaders and community are having mix feeling with others asking the people of Lango to forget the past and have heart of togetherness and Unity among the two tribes.
