The alarming rate of accidents caused by Boda Boda riders has forced the police in Lira to enforce the carrying of riding permits by all riders effective this month.

Mohamed Bigirwa, the Officer in Charge of Traffic in Lira district said serious accidents that have occurred by riders have been attributed to mainly those without valid riders' permit.

Bigirwa said the police who shall be charged with ensuring that all riders have the valid permits have also been instructed to impound any motorcycle being ridden by unlicensed rider.

He appealed to all Boda Boda riders to acquire the riding permits as a prerequisite for their safety and to allow them operate their business.

Meanwhile, Vincent Kizito Odaga, the head of enforcement for Lira United Motorcycle Bodaboda Association-LUMBA attributed the delays in obtaining the riding permits to the distance and the time it requires one to process the documents from the main office in Gulu.

He said despite their attempts to acquire the permits, there are still many challenges which he urges the Police to be tolerant to.

In addition to permits, the Police says the move will also require the Boda Bodas to have reflector Jackets, and safety helmets.
